YOHJI YAMAMOTO

Yohji Yamamoto founded his eponymous brand in Tokyo in 1984. Known for his tailoring skills, he creates finely-crafted, avant-garde outfits with influences from Japanese history and fashion. His pieces are often flowy and drapey, and almost always black, a color that Yamamoto described as both “modest and arrogant,” but perennially “mysterious.” He has collaborated with brands, including Adidas, Hermès, and Mikimoto, and artists, including David Bowie, Takeshi Kitano, and Pina Bausch.
